A crystal reads well in daylight on its own. In a hallway in November it does not, and that is what the light base is for — it fires light up through the bottom of the glass so the engraving stands out in a dim room.

Wooden-style finish. Five settings: white, blue, red, green, and a slow multicolour fade. White is the one most people settle on; it keeps the picture looking like a photograph rather than a nightclub.

We will be straight with you — it is not essential. It matters most for the smaller crystals and for anywhere the crystal will sit away from a window.

Questions we get asked

Do I need one?
No. In good daylight the engraving shows perfectly well unlit. Buy the base if the crystal is going somewhere dark, or if it is one of the smaller shapes.

Which colour should I choose?
White, in almost every case. The coloured settings are fun for an hour and most people go back to white.

Will it fit the crystal I have already bought?
